Mark Margolis, ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Scarface’ actor, Dead at 83

An Emmy nominee for playing the silent but deadly, bell-ringing Mexican cartel boss Hector “Tio” Salamanca in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” Mark Margolis, has died at the age of 83. The actor died following a short illness, on Thursday at New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Who was Mark Margolis?

Mark Margolis was an American actor, born on 26th November 1939, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S. Mark Margolis best known for portraying Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His performance in ‘Breaking Bad’ was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2012.

Mark Margolis was born into a Jewish family. He was the son of Fanya (née Fried) and Isidore Margolis. He started acting in his teens. He was also known for playing Alberto “The Shadow” in Scarface and Antonio Nappa in Oz. 

At the age of 19, he was a student under Stella Adler at the Actors Studio. He was also later trained by Lee Strasberg and Barbara Loden. 

Margolis was briefly a student at Temple University before dropping out and moving to New York City. At the age of 19, he was a student under Stella Adler at the Actors Studio and later with Lee Strasberg and Barbara Loden. 

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline, along with son Morgan and three grandchildren. The versatile Margolis worked steadily for more than 60 years, earning one Emmy nomination for outstanding guest actor for “Breaking Bad” in 2012. 

In Hollywood breakout was baneful bodyguard Alberto the Shadow in 1983’s “Scarface.” More recently he played a role in the fearsome Hector “Tio” Salamanca in “Breaking Bad” and its prequel spinoff, “Better Call Saul.” Hundreds of roles Margolis has played On the stage and screen.

Most memorable and intimidating villains franchise’s was Salamanca : a wheelchair-bound drug lord who suffered a stroke and couldn’t speak, but rang a bell to communicate.

“I looked at the script and thought, ‘Oh my, I don’t have to learn any lines,’ ” Margolis told the Better Call Saul Insider Podcast last year. “I just have to fly out to New Mexico, get into the scene and think. For me, it was heaven.”

He most recently appeared in Showtime series “Your Honor” earlier this year, alongside “Breaking Bad” co-star Bryan Cranston. He followed As a recognizable face that up with a recurring role on “The Equalizer” and continued through the 1980s and ’90s in small roles, like Jim Carrey’s landlord in 1994’s “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”

His acting credits also include “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “1492: Conquest of Paradise,” “The Thomas Crown Affair,” “The Blacklist” and “Daredevil.”

His son Morgan Margolis In a Statement said that on Thursday at a New York City hospital after a short illness, Margolis died. according to the statement Morgan Margolis and the actor’s wife Jacqueline Margolis of 61 years, were by his side when he died at Mount Sinai Hospital.
