Jimmy Buffett Cause of Death Revealed as Merkel Cell Skin Cancer
Jimmy Buffett, the renowned musician and entrepreneur, passed away at the age of 76. His official website disclosed the cause of his death, revealing that he succumbed to Merkel cell skin cancer at his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York. Mr. Buffett valiantly battled this rare carcinoma for a period of four years, as described by the National Cancer Institute.
Merkel cell skin cancer typically manifests as a solitary, painless lump on sun-exposed skin and tends to spread rapidly, making it the second most common cause of skin cancer-related deaths after melanoma.
Remarkably, Jimmy Buffett continued to perform throughout his cancer treatment. His final show was an unexpected 45-minute appearance at a Mac McAnally concert in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on July 2, where his mere presence electrified the audience.
In a statement announcing his passing, it was conveyed that Jimmy Buffett left this world peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, friends, music, and beloved dogs. He lived his life akin to a melodic journey until his very last breath, and his absence will be profoundly felt by countless admirers.
Jimmy Buffett was widely celebrated for his iconic song “Margaritaville” and an illustrious songwriting career spanning over 50 years. Beyond his musical accomplishments, he crafted a billion-dollar business empire and cultivated a devoted fan base.
In 2022, concerns about his health surfaced when he was hospitalized due to an undisclosed ailment, which led to the cancellation of several of his shows. In May and June of 2023, he publicly disclosed that he was readmitted to the hospital to address urgent health issues.
Jimmy Buffett’s passing, which occurred during the unofficial end of the summer season, was mourned by prominent figures including fellow musicians such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Kenny Chesney, as well as U.S. presidents Joe Biden and Bill Clinton.
Reflecting on his life in a 2020 interview with USA TODAY upon the release of his final album, “Life on the Flipside,” Buffett acknowledged that he had experienced a few close calls in life, attributing the song “Live Like It’s Your Last Day” to events like his 1994 plane crash and a 2011 stage fall. He noted that he had been living with the mindset of cherishing every day as if it were his last for quite some time.
